The Editor's Column

This is still a work in progress, but here at WhosPlayin, we wanted to find out what industries were contributing the most to our incumbent Members of Congress here in Texas.

So we downloaded the FEC data for the 2008 election cycle, and did some processing on it to add industry classifications to all contributions received from committees.

So, for each incumbent, we list a total contribution from each contributor by industry, then we do an industry summary for each incumbent.

Please have a look at our reports and tell us what you think.

We're hoping to add more information, such as rundowns of individual contributor cash, as well as possibly some comparative averages.

So far, we've classified about 40% of all of the PACs, but 80% of the contributions for 2008. PACs were classified by in some cases automatically based on the presence of a keyword in the name of the PAC or its affiliated organization. In many cases, these were classified manually by examining the PAC's website

We welcome input on the classifications.

Update - 1/1/2009
- Added Senators
- Classified some employers by industry - still lots of work to do.
- Summarized individual contributions by industry
- Various formatting and cleanup.
