Political Plagiarism, the sincerest form of flattery?

Inane Ponderings and Other Happy Horse Crap
Posted by WhosPlayin on 2008/3/16 10:10:00 (1219 reads)

Last week, it was brought to my attention that one of our Lewisville City Council candidates, lifted a lot of the text on his website from another candidate here in Denton County in a completely different race.

To be fair, in politics, it's common to lift a particularly effective line from a political ally, and use it in one's own material. If someone has found the best way to express something, why re-invent the wheel, right?

Well, in this case, Gorena basically lifted an entire web page without permission, leaving paragraphs in the same order, and most of the wording the same: (click the image to view a larger version)

Guerra (original)Gorena (copy)

Karen Guerra is a candidate for District Judge in Denton County. She's been in the race since this fall. Her "volunteer" page is shown. John Gorena is a local website designer here in Lewisville who became active in city politics last year. His campaign website was launched last week, and his "volunteer" page is shown.

Anyhow, the funny thing about Gorena is how strict he is with regard to the copyright on his own website:
GRAPHICS, LAYOUT
& DESIGN are

And of course, the META tag in his site's HTML:
">

But my absolute favorite is the broken JavaScript in the page, that is intended to capture a "right-click" of the mouse and pop up this message:
Protected Source Code! Unauthorized use and viewing of this code is FORBIDDEN!

Code and contents of this site is Copyright 1995 -2006 by JMG Enterprises™, All rights reserved.

Yes, interesting eh? FORBIDDEN to simply view source code? HA! I'm an outlaw!

For what it's worth, the plagiarism doesn't bother me nearly as much as this guy putting his name and face on top of the American Flag:

"The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." - U.S. Code 36 §176(g)

But folks, never mind the plagiarism, hypocrisy, and flag desecration. I'm sure Gorena is ready to deal with the myriad issues our city faces in the next few years. Focus on the illegal aliens, folks. Pay no attention to what's up my sleeve...

Update: This was originally posted on 3/16/08, but we took it down in 2009 at the request of Mr. Gorena, who felt embarrassed by it and asked me to take it down. Though he did have a gun in his hand at the time, I willingly went along with it for two reasons:
1. I was a bit "mean" in the way that I went after him for it.
2. He seemed contrite, and had told me he wasn't running for office again, so I considered it to be a bit harsh to let it remain in public and showing up in Google search results for essentially a private person.

I've decided to un-hide this post in light of some more recent comments that Mr. Gorena made to me, and the fact that he is now an elected official and running for re-election. We think it speaks to an important aspect of Gorena's personality, which is a lack of attention to detail.

It's not my best writing, and what I should have done was to contact Gorena before publishing the story. But I wanted to make it available again so I could refer to it, and so that anyone with questions could see exactly what I wrote.

 Gorena's response
I had the privilege of sitting with John Gorena for 2 hours this afternoon over lunch, and discussing various issues. This post was one of the topics, and though he was gracious, Gorena was not pleased with this post.

In retrospect, knowing that I was dealing with an imperfect human being, rather than someone putting himself out there as if he were perfect, I should have been a little less "gotcha" with this story. It's not as if Gorena was a polished politician preaching about campaign ethics.

I'm learning this "citizen journalism" thing as I go. One of the things I've learned this year is the need to seek input from all sides. I failed to do that with this post.

Gorena notes that he was working 60 -70 hour weeks during the time this happened and that someone gave him this content, and he used it without really considering the source. Since I didn't call him to verify the source, (I checked with Guerra instead) he didn't know until after my blog was posted.

To his credit - and I think I've mentioned this in another post - Gorena not only fixed the plagiarism, but took responsibility for the oversight. I believe he's telling the truth, and I would urge people not to hold this one-time transgression against him.

None of this means that I'm getting soft, or that I'll back off from calling out what I consider to be bad ideas or bad behavior from anyone in the public eye. I'm just saying that I'm also an imperfect person, and I am always striving to improve the way I do things: even this expensive hobby called blogging.
