Burgess Town Hall Lively but Un-Eventful

Local Notes and Events
Posted by WhosPlayin on 2009/8/8 13:00:00 (651 reads)

I'm happy to report that I'm back from the Congressional town hall meeting, held in Denton this morning, and the video is processing as I type this.

I had concerns about some of the more radical elements attempting to disrupt the meeting, based on some emails I had seen, but the crowd of about 600 - 800 people* were fairly well-behaved, even though there was some attempt at shouting over each other, and at least one attempt by a man to provoke any union members that might be present into a fight.

(Dallas Morning News estimates 1500 attended. I'll defer to their judgment)

Burgess spoke for less than about 5 minutes at the beginning, then took questions from the audience for the remainder of the hour and half session, staying later to speak to some on an individual basis.

Because of the overflow crowd, Burgess delivered his remarks from a stage setup outside of the Art Center. An overhead door on the side of the Center was opened up to allow an unobstructed view, and a PA system was setup to project over the sometime-chattering crowd.

The questions and applause levels would seem to indicate healthy numbers of both supporters and detractors of Health Care Reform. Discussing it afterward with some attendees who stuck around to chat, most of them thought that it was about 50/50, though I would guess it was probably more like 65/35 against reform. Both sides brought signs, and to my surprise, some were actually allowed in the building.

There was no overt campaigning by any elected official, but plenty of Burgess' supporters sported campaign wear, with at least one woman bringing in a full-sized Burgess campaign yard sign.

I had emailed in advance with my concerns about whether there would be a place to setup my camera, and whether adequate security arrangements were in place. Though I didn't receive a response by the end of business on Friday, I was pleased to see that there were what looked to be about 10 Denton Police officers present - compared to the typical single uniformed officer. In addition, there was sufficient media area to get mostly unobstructed footage.

Knowing that I'm not exactly Burgess' favorite citizen journalist, I do want to acknowledge his staff for being courteous and professional in accomodating me and the several other bloggers that were there to cover the event.

When I get the video edited, I'll post what I can, and provide more commentary on what I thought were the high and low points of this meeting.

Video #1: Before the meeting.

Video #4

(Still editing and processing the rest. There's a lot of it, and the audio is not so great.)

Your videos are deceiving. I am so sad that the Democratic Party of Denton has you as "their"reporter. You deceive and lie about things that happened at these meetings This is your bias opinion and another reason why we can not trust democrats.

Deceiving? Do you suppose that I hired actors to come out and act like ignorant children?

As for the Denton County Democrats, I'm a member, but I'm certainly not their reporter.

How do you think I'm being deceptive? Do you have specific examples, or is that your standard answer when facts don't agree with your opinions?

Well Steve...the previous person might think you biased because you only showed the video of Jeniffer(the person you want to vote for)...
But once again we must say this is "your" website and you can put on here what you want.

How would you feel if the Govt. came along and started telling you what you can or can not put on your website? You laugh and say that is such an extreme thought? If we continue on this path my friend that is exactly what will happen. Do you personally know anyone that has defected from a country? Leaving like theives in the night? I do, and let me tell you...he is seeing allot of similarities in how this country is changing.

 Fair and Biased
ha! We never claimed to be unbiased. More video is coming. It's just a tedious process of editing and annotating.

Honestly, I can't see how we would be going down a path to fascism. I hear people talking about how "we're losing our freedoms", but I've yet to hear anyone explain how.

What "path" do you think our country is headed on?

The only "path" I saw at the Burgess rally -- excuse me, "town hall" -- was a congressman, who's taken more than $1 million dollars in campaign contributions from the health insurance industry and drug companies, riling up a crowd of concerned Americans who have been duped into serving as stormtroopers for those companies' interests.

I don't have to write any sort of deceptive commentary, this video speaks for itself.
Libs are always FAR more angry, far more violent...yet they have NO IDEA what they are fighting for or against. The facts are always irrelevant to them!!

Congratulations, you found some Obama supporters that can't well articulate. I guess you can paint us all with the same brush now.

Back to the topic at hand. You accused me of being deceptive, and yet you can't back it up. That's very typical of the radical right wing who listen to inflammatory talk radio all day and think they know something. Yet when you ask for facts, all they can come up with is ad-hominem attacks and vague assertions they can't back up.

Thanks once again for proving my point.

Loved Jennifer Giles question
Summary based upon Burgess's answer to her question-

Burgess “You can’t fight something with nothing…”
So, it’s not about fixing a broken system-but fighting to stop needed change?

Burgess-“it is easier to poke holes than it is to defend you own product”

Congressmen Burgess,-when your product is simply a head fake necessary to give the illusion of offering a counter solution, as you basically admitted, it would be difficult to defend. Ironically, all of the frightened constituents at the meeting have misdirected their outrage, fear, etc… onto the Democrats and President Obama. Had they (Republicans) done their job when they had control of everything, it would have been case closed, no need to fear “Obamacare”. It appears Mr. Burgess’s answer exposes Republicans as either, fighting for the Status Quo, talking the easy way out, or are incapable of producing results for the American people when they are in power. Pick one or all three.
Oh...but lets vote for them again!
ps-it's the same thing with their anti-choice bs.
Suckers.
