Based on geological diagrams, these are the strata under our neighborhoods in South Lewisville.  (Even though you thought it was just miles of clay.)

The Barnett Shale is approximately 10,000 - 11,000 feet (about 2 miles) down.

It is approximately 650 feet thick, and bordered on the bottom by the Viola Lime formation, which allows for more aggressive fracturing of the shale, and thus greater gas recovery.

Note that the scale is only approximate.

Denton County GIS Map (Lewisville Highlighted) showing isopach (formation thickness) of the Barnett Shale in various locations overlaid.  Note this map's slightly different location of the Muenster Arch from other maps, but still appearing to put the arch well to the East of most parts of Lewisville.

The part of the Barnett Shale core area centered around Western Denton County, Eastern Wise County, and Northern Tarrant County is known as the Newark East field

This map, from the Denton County GIS system, is overlaid with an approximate location of the Muenster Arch geological formation, which marks the Northeastern boundary of the Barnett Shale natural gas formation.  The exact boundary of the Muenster Arch is not precisely mapped yet, but with increased drilling in the Barnett Shale, producers are moving closer.

Lewisville is bisected somewhere to the east of I-35 E, according to conventional wisdom.

Depending on which map you view (and there are many online), the Muenster arch may be shown in varying places, but roughly running from the Northwest corner to the Southwest corner.

Tonight, about 200 - 300 residents of the Southern Lewisville neighborhoods around the Willow Grove and Valley Vista Estates areas met in Willow Grove Park to discuss a recent gas lease offer from Cherokee Horn, LP.

Residents receiving offers are encouraged to join the Yahoo group currently being used to share information.  By holding out on signing until the neighborhood can reach an agreement as a group, our homeowners stand a greater chance of achieving valuable environmental and nuisance abatement concessions as well as fair compensation.

This aerial map shows the approximate locations of proposed drilling sites in Southern Lewisville.

This is by memory after viewing the map in the land man's office.  The actual size of the pads and precise location may vary a bit, but these are the correct parcels.
