Questions about Neighborhood Drilling

Category: The Editor's Column :

Author: WhosPlayin (10:54 pm)
At this point in our neighborhood's dealings with possible gas drilling, it seems that at every turn, we have more questions than we have answers. As I write this, it's late and I'm tired, but I thought I'd take a moment to post some questions that have been sent by folks through the email list and/or this website.

1. Do we actually want drilling for natural gas to occur in our neighborhood? In order to answer this we need to get our hands on additional information. I think we should all know what impact drilling will have in Lewisville so we need to ask ourselves some of these questions.

a) how many trees will be replaced/killed/replanted?
b) how many animals will be killed/replaced?
c) what is 3 or 5 decibel level sound like at 400 ft or whatever the easement will be?
d) how much additional traffic including construction traffic will be running up and down our streets?
e) how long will construction take and what affect will it cause on our community (i.e. construction, drilling, pipelines, road closures, etc)?
f) how much light pollution will the rigs cause since we're in the flight path?
g) what are the risks (spills, explosions, collapses, foundations, earthquakes, fires, etc)?
h) what will be left when the wells run dry?
i) I'm sure I'm missing more which is why we should continue our investigation and ask others who have first hand knowledge about this in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
j) what is the price we are willing to sell at to accommodate for these sacrifices?

2. What % of our community must accept their offer in order for drilling to occur? If we get to this point then we all might as well agree and at least make some $$ out of this. What % has already signed?

3. What will the affect be on the City of Lewisville? We should talk to the city officials (if someone hasn't already) to find out what their opinion is on this company, drilling, planned sites, taxes, etc. Has anyone tried to contact them and if so are they willing to speak with the group?
